Original small scale sculptural art made with concrete artist plaster pouring in the back side of the canvas.
ABOUT ‘The Cells’
The piece is inspired by a hexagon, one of the most common shape in nature. You can find it in honeycomb, snowflakes, insect eyes, hexagonal crystals, even in the foam, which is the collection of sphere shaped soap bubbles that have ordered in a way to resemble hexagon when they snap. In science, organic compounds are represented in a shape of hexagon.
It has got six sides and six angles and the grid can fill the cell area without the waste of ‘blank’ space and it has got more strength.
It signifies higher wisdom and spirituality. Although being angular, it evokes piece and calmness, but at the same time it is very powerful and magical.
IN GENERAL
I started experimenting with plaster while studying Interior architecture at School of Applied Arts and Culture, as a part of the Plastic arts course. One day while working on a different project, I randomly poured leftover gypsum in the back side of the canvas and it was one of the happy accidents that gave me my art style. And I am still evolving.
My focus is to explore the concept of composition in three dimensional space: using only one main material but different techniques, thus playing with levels, texture, volume, proportions, surface, and perspective.
It is fascinating how powder particles mixed with water eventually become a shape. Either with the help of mold, thus making it more geometrical, either with free hand pouring, making it more free spirited and versatile. The final finish cannot be changed and it is always a big excitement to see how the final piece would look like.
The forms are geometrical, clear, architectural, and without decoration or distractions. They are raw and unfiltered and the final piece is imperfect. The final the piece is at the same time organized as well as disordered.
I draw inspiration from people, nature, myths, words and different concepts. However, my biggest inspiration is the city of Athens. The city with the most perfectly organized harmony and analogies, also being chaotic and random at the same time.
This is what each sculptural art piece denotes. There is something poetic and fragile in this brutalist unfinished strong material. The strict and raw geometrical shapes are combined with free hand pouring that give a feeling of flow and movement. There is emphasis on the texture and forms rather than color and material.
This art piece is for people who invest in a good design and see the value in unique one of a kind art work that in its simplicity has got so much to tell.
DIMENSIONS:
22.5 X 32.5 X 1.5 cm // approx. 8.8 x 12.8 x 0.6 in
